Commercial Area - What Can I Do?

Energy Tips

  • Don't overlight your space.  Remove unneeded light bulbs and fluorescent ballasts in over lighted areas
  • Turn off lights near windows
  • Keep fluorescent fixtures clean
  • Use task lights instead of full room illumination
  • Turn off lights when area is unoccupied
  • Install occupancy sensors to control lighting
  • Use natural daylighting when possible
  • Use only necessary safety and security lighting at night
  • Make sure lights that are on 24 hours a day are energy efficient bulbs
  • Use LED Exits signs
  • Replace incandescent lights with compact fluorescents or LED bulbs
  • Replace T-12 fluorescent tubes with T-8 fluorescent tubes
  • Reduce or eliminate unnecessary outside lighting
  • Use high efficiency (high pressure sodium or LED) parking lot lights
  • Schedule cleaning when lights will be on anyway

  • Set heating thermostat at 68ºF (20ºC) in winter
  • Set air conditioning thermostat at 76-78ºF (25ºC) in summer
  • Turn off air conditioning one-half to one hour before closing time
  • Install a automatic thermostat to control the temperature for opening and closing times and weekends when the building is not open.
  • Regularly clean and service your heating and cooling equipment for optimum performance.
  • When replacing equipment, replace with high efficiency units
  • Consider a cogeneration system if you have a need for the waste heat

Air Infiltration

  • Fix doors and windows that don't close completely
  • Fix broken glass
  • Adjust automatic door closers
  • Seal cracks around doors and windows
  • Seal holes around plumbing and HVAC penetrations in the building envelope

  • Check the roof for proper insulation.  Add insulation when reroofing.
  • Check walls for proper insulation and work with a insulation contractor to determine best way to improve your insulation levels.

Water Heating

  • Lower hot water temperature to 105-110ºF (43ºC)
  • Fix all leaks in plumbing to save water & hot water
  • Insulate your hot water tank and the pipes that run from it.
  • Install faucet aerators to reduce flow
  • Install water-saving showerheads if you have showers
  • Consider a tankless point-of-use water heater if you water heater tank is a long way far from where you need it.
  • Install a solar hot water heating system

Equipment and Machines

  • Turn off equipment whenever possible
  • Use your equipment more efficiently at capacity rather than smaller loads
  • Purchase equipment and machines that have energy saving features
  • Don't buy anything larger or more powerful than is really needed to do the job.
